| The LDDN Event was rescheduled till September 2004
The Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform (OMSAR), the Professional Computer Association (PCA) and the UNICT TF, under the patronage of h.e. the Speaker of Parliament Mr. Nabih Berri is officially launching in september 2004 in Beirut the "Lebanese Diaspora Digital Network" initiative (LDDN).
Lebanon’s global Diaspora is probably the largest in the world. These people carry with them the Lebanese culture, knowledge, and have successfully created vibrant Lebanese communities in their host countries. They have also always contributed to the economic prosperity of Lebanon through their frequent visits and/or financial support of their immediate families. Hence, the need to embrace this group of people and provide a facility for them to interconnect with each other and particularly with their native roots. Through this facility, Lebanon will be able to better leverage its Diaspora for national projects and interests. So comes the idea of establishing a Lebanese Diaspora Digital Network (LDDN).
This digital network is an effective way to constitute a channel of communication that will facilitate the export and import of Lebanese know how, culture and ultimately wealth in all sectors of society. It will help in fostering national development in Lebanon and establish global linkages through mobilizing the technological, entrepreneurial and professional expertise and resources of the Lebanese Diaspora and national counterparts.
The LDDN, as a portal, will encompass a broad range of information covering for example:
· A “Who’s Who!” directory (by profession, by interest, etc.). This will have people profiles that would have in addition to a name and address, a brief description about the person, the community, the profession (to be categorized), how long outside Lebanon, etc.
· A multi-purpose directory that can be searched by geographic area, by specialty, area of interest.
· Online forums centered on a subject matter (person, topics of interest, etc.).
· Targeted links to web sites in Lebanon for the Diaspora and in the Diaspora host countries for Lebanese such as business opportunities, e-procurement (products on-line), e-administration (government such as Informs).
The official launch of the Lebanese Global Digital Community initiative, under the patronage of His Excellency the Speaker of Parliament Mr. Nabih Berri, is planned for September 2004 in Beirut where a number of distinguished Lebanese expatriates will be present to be the first LDDN members.
